Luckily, the IFSA site is linked from from fairly high-profile Web sites like gnu.org and fsf.org. This creates a fair amount of traffic. The downside is that lots of spammers and their nefarious bots spend lots of time trying to get their filth onto our boards.
Here are some methods I use to keep the number of spam registrations to almost none...
1. Always use the latest available version of phpBB.
2. Set the "Enable account activation" parameter to "User" instead of "None." This will require the user have a valid email address, and activate their account after receiving the registration confirmation message.
3. Read the "
Preventing SPAM" thread on the phpBB Web site.
4. Use the "
Registration Auth Code (RAC) MOD" which asks registrants to enter an authorization code (found by looking in a specified location on your site) before they are allowed to register. This is in addition to the visual confirmation code, which many spammers are able to parse and extract with OCR" This MOD works very well. If you begin getting spam registrations, you can simply change the authorization code again...
